Prepare to be mesmerized by the sights and sounds of Sri
Lanka’s marine life. Our beautiful island is perfectly juxtaposed
near the equator, surrounded by the warm waters of the Indian
Ocean, and blessed with beautiful cascading waterfalls and
more than a hundred bountiful flowing rivers. As such, Sri
Lanka is home to a rich variety of aquatic life.
Our vividly colorful corals will leave you mesmerized.
Hikkaduwa is one of the best places in Sri Lanka for viewing
corals, where the reef is just meters to the shore. You
can choose between snorkeling and riding in a glass-bottomed
boat to see our scintillating array of corals.
Among the living coral swim a mystifying variety of colorful
fish. Sri Lanka has an abundance of tropical fish and most
have found a safe haven in the marshes and the rivers. Angelfish,
butterflyfish, surgeonfish, scorpionfish, fusilier, sweetlips…
are just some of the fish species taking refuge in the salty
waters of this beautiful island. Then there are freshwater
fish species; pufferfish, carplet, catfish and archerfish
to name a few. Although whale and dolphin watching is still
in its infancy in Sri Lanka, our seas are home to quite
a number species. The Common blue whale which is the world’s
largest marine mammal, bryde’s whale, sperm whale and the
humpback whale are just some of the awesome marine creatures
you might be able to see.
